IMPORTANCE OF PLAY FOR CHILDREN
The play is about more than having fun. At the Play System, we take play seriously. The play has many benefits for both toddlers and older kids. It gets them active and moving, which can help instill a love of exercise early and encourage children to embrace the active lifestyle crucial for good health as they grow older.
The play is also a significant way for children to learn about the world around them. Playground equipment can help children develop gross motor skills, balance and confidence early on. Later, it can help them further build social, cognitive, emotional, physical and fine motor skills.
Playspaces can even be used as a tool for emphasizing concepts taught in the classroom. Our activity panels are famous just for this reason! For many children, the playground is one of the first places they get to interact independently with their peers. Our selection of inclusive playgrounds can help with this, as well.
Physical Activity
Play encourages children to exercise and stay active while developing physical strength. Children who play on slides and climbers develop balance, strength and agility. Children who run from one piece of playground equipment to another develop cardiovascular strength and work on their physical health and well-being. Early childhood play can also help children see that exercise is fun, which can mean they continue to stay active.
Social & Interaction Development
Play isn’t just for fun. It also helps encourage growth and development in children. Play can help develop social skills, for example, by encouraging children to engage in play together. When children play on the playground and imagine themselves on a pirate ship, they may add to each other’s ideas, agree on a set of rules, and each take on specific roles as part of their game. The prepares them for social interaction in other ways, too.
Sensory Development
For younger children, play on the playground helps foster curiosity, imagination, and sensory development. Children may touch textured surfaces of playground equipment, exploring the world with that sense. They may listen to the sounds of a playground and get curious about the sound. The bright colors of the playground and the various shapes may help encourage visual curiosity and recognize shapes and colors. For older children, activity panels can help with the recognition of numbers, shapes, and letters.
